Information Communication Technology (ICT) is an important part of the boys’ life at St John's.
Our aim through ICT is to help the boys gain confidence and familiarise themselves with technologies that they will encounter in their everyday lives. At St John’s we see ICT literacy as an essential skill to prepare boys for their future endeavours and an understanding of how to use technology safely and responsibly is essential.
Boys throughout the School have structured ICT lessons where they learn not only to understand, but to enjoy using today’s technology. Alongside specific Computing lessons ICT is increasingly used to support other curriculum areas from Maths to Music.
All year groups benefit from working in the dedicated ICT Suite, but with pools of Microsoft Surface 3s and Internet-ready PCs in all classrooms the whole school is connected using Microsoft server technology, enabling pupils to access their work files from anywhere in the school.
Core Microsoft-based skills are taught from Year One and by the time the boys leave St John’s they will have become proficient users of Microsoft packages including spreadsheets, presentations and database management. In addition they will have encountered and used coding software such as Python, Scratch, Logo and Espresso, computer programming is taught in every year group, and the boys have a good understanding of how to use the Internet for effective research and communication
Ultimately, all pupils are expected to take away from their ICT lessons the skills necessary to implement the use of ICT in all areas of the School curriculum.
